Screen sharing bug in Snow Leopard?

Screen Saring.app error message :-(Today I tried screen sharing between my laptop and desktop over a local network and it wouldn't work in either direction. I kept getting "Authentication Failed" messages which told me to check my username and password. I got it to work once by entering my unix username and password and then quitting screen sharing while it was trying to connect. I then started a new session with the old login window still doing it's thing, and it logged in immediately and brought up the remote computer. This wasn't repeatable, and leaves extra login windows sitting around that I couldn't figure out how to close.

Solution

In the end, using my full name instead of my unix username appears to be working. This is weird, since using my unix username works for file sharing...

Yeah, weird problem. Weirder still, I got one of the new iMacs, and when I transferred all my data and settings over, the problem did not manifest itself on the new machine.

I figured this out and then set to find out if anyone else had this happen: Glad to know I'm not crazy, but Apple sure is, by the looks of this bug (or is it an "enhancement"?)

In my case, however, if I change the Full name of the local account to match the UNIX username in the DS, it stops working, and then only the Full Name of the Network Account works. Go figure!

At first it didn't work, and so I used capital letters for my username to connect and it worked! Both usernames for my Macbook Pro and iMac are the same.

@gemininine Heh, weird. I would never have thought to try that.

I don't know what I did, but this issue eventually went away for me and logging in with my lowercased username works fine for me now.

Amazing. I would never have thought to use all-caps to login, but yes, it worked! Thank you! (Both my long and short names are identical and entirely in lower case!)

What a dumb bug. Surely they could fix this in seconds if they bothered?

I tore my hair out with this. Tried every "solution" of the first 100 pages of Google. Simply using the full name works! Thanks thanks thanks!

This is a ridiculous bug, Apple nearly made me throw stuff out of the window.

Wow. Thanks for the tip. All Caps worked. Apple - seriously?
